These Celebrity Divorces Left Them Broke and Broken

Divorces are a difficult and stressful time for everyone involved, regardless of who you are. And with around 50% of marriages ending in divorce, they are increasingly common. However, when you add millions (or billions) of dollars to the equation, things get even crazier. With that in mind, here are a couple of ridiculously expensive celebrity divorces that them a lot of money.

Rupert Murdoch

Murdoch, who is the current CEO of Fox News and is worth over $15 Billion, holds the record for one of the most expensive divorces of all time. After 32 years of marriage to his wife, Anna Maria Mann, the two called it quits in 1999. The divorce settlement cost him a ridiculous $1.7 Billion, with over $100 million of that being provided in cash. Just over two weeks after the divorce, Murdoch married a 30-year old Wendi Deng, who he had met while he was married. And as you might expect, the two are now divorced as well.

Mel Gibson

After a famous 2006 DUI and anti-Semitic rant by Mel Gibson, he and his wife decide to separate. The divorce was officially filed for a few years later in 2009, citing irreconcilable differences as the cause of the marital issues. The prenup between Gibson and his ex-wife Robyn Moore entitled her to half of everything he earned from 1980 onward. It was reported that she walked away with a settlement worth over $400 million as a result of the divorce.

Tiger Woods

Prior to 2009, Tiger Woods was on top of the world. He was the face of golf and was one of the richest and most recognizable athletes on the planet. However, that all changed when he crashed his Escalade into a tree outside of his home, which led him to admit to having several extra-marital affairs. Soon after, Woods and his now ex-wife Elin Nordegren announced their divorce soon after. She was awarded more than $100 million during the divorce.

Steven Spielberg

Spielberg and Amy Irving were married for only four years, but those four years ended up being very expensive for Spielberg. Their divorce cost him a reported $100 million, and the two separated due to both being quite ambitious with their careers and not being on the same page in terms of what they wanted or expected. In an interesting event, the couple actually had a prenup agreement, but it was scribbled on a napkin and thus wasn’t counted as official.

Robert L. Johnson

Robert L. Johnson is the co-founder of BET and was the first African American billionaire. From 1969 to 2002, he was married to Sheila Crump and the two were seemingly happy. However, it was revealed that Johnson had a series of affairs over several years, which obviously didn’t sit well with his wife. As a result, the pair got a divorce and Johnson paid his wife a settlement of around $400 million.
